I live in an apartment complex and have a strong suspicion that the maintenance workers are coming inside when I am away.
I'd like to set up some type of surveillance, possibly wireless because I do not have any video recording devices, nor do I want to leave my laptop out in the opening.
Where can I go and what associating equipment will I need?
Also, how simple would it be to set up?

I'm doing a project on safety for my campus. If i wanted to install a camera at the entrance of a building, have it feed into a monitor in one of the rooms in the building and I wanted to send a live feed of the surveillance to another building less than a mile away, what equipment would I need? Thanks!

They do make wireless cameras, also wired, you need to make sure that you have a device that it can connect to the network with, such as a hub, wireless access, access point, switch or router.

Once the device is on the network you will be able to connect to the IP address of the device and Wha,la you are off to the races

A few months ago, my house (really just my garage) was burglarized. The thief cracked my top security system: He walked up to my car (which was parked on the street), opened the door (which was unlocked), and used my own garage door opener to open my garage door.

Now I've learned that these criminal masterminds have struck again. My neighbor told me they stole some CDs and stuff out of his car.

I have 3 cars and a 2 car garage so one must be parked on the street. I cover it with a car cover and I have noticed several nights over the past few weeks that the cover has been disturbed.

Okay, so I'm not going to purchase any video surveillance equipment or anything like that. But is there any way to catch this guy? Or just make him pay a little?
I thought I'd add that my neighbor is ridiculously safe. Hence, my car door was unlocked. Ialready have two dogs (useless) and my neighbors would laugh if I suggested neighborhood watch.
and the "top notch security system" description was sarcastic. If they really wanted to get some good stuff, they should have opened by back gate (which has no lock) and walked into my house from by back door (which is usuallly wide open).

I agree with the stakeout idea.
Buy a pellet gun (0.177 caliber is the easiest to find) and some hollow point pellets. Fill the hollow tips with the hottest hot sauce you can find. Let it dry in the pellets long enough to stay inside.
Then hide in a van across the street from your car, and when he shows up pop him in the @$$ as many times as you can before he runs crying into the night. Getting shot with a pellet will hurt, and the hot sauce will burn like HELL.
I doubt he'll be back.

Plain and simple. Now a few details. I live in Brooklyn, NY, in a big Bay Ridge building. I suspect my neighbour of stealing several of my packages. Actually I have two suspects, but whatever.
I know for a fact that my super couldn't care less about helping because every time I talk to him, he constantly says "No se", "Oh, yo no se" or whatever, I don't speak Spanish; this guy is an idiot, whose rent is paid for.
To reiterate my point, I want to set up a video surveillance camera right above my apartment, but not too high. I don't want it to be very visible (actually close to invisible to an untrained eye).
Primarily, my issue is the legality of this. Nowhere in my lease does it mention anything about surveillance equipment being prohibited. My father's thinking is "Hey, we pay the rent; might as well expect some protection!" Technically, he's right. We're from Europe; this is how those people think. However, I want to make sure that, once everything is in place, and we catch the bastard(s), they'll be dealt with. I don't want to wind up being arrested for illegally taking the criminal's picture. This way, it'll be trading places - instead of the criminal going to jail, I'll go for 'violating' the law.

I'm looking to add video surveilance to my home outside and maybe inside. Sam's Costco have recently had packages for this but I'm guesing they are mostly junk and still not all that cheap.
I know the basics of what I want:
good day/night indoor/outdoor video quality. You know, where you can actually identify a person in the video or maybe even read a licence plate of a car in your drive instead of a blurred figure. ( I notice many cameras say what their video quality is and FPS rate, but then rad further to see that it's "shared" among as many cameras as you attach which means good video if you have 1 cam but crap if you have 4 or more. I need quality in all 4 or 8 cameras at the same time

remote/internet viewing, programing capability
Stand alone unit w/ hard drive recording. None of this use your own computer junk.

And possibly zoom/tilt/pan functionality.

w/ that said, I lso don't have a fortune to pend!

They sell low cost name brand surveillance products.

Many video security systems are coming from overseas fly-by-night manufacturers. The low prices on some of these products are great but the quality of the hardware is horrible. I recommend sticking with the companies that have proven track records. Most name brand products are backed by the manufacturers warranty that can be trusted.

The following letter was sent to a long time patron of a local Store. After receiving this letter, she vowed that she would NEVER take her husband shopping with her again!!!

Over the past six months, your husband, has been causing quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this type of behavior and have considered banning the entire family from shopping in any of our stores. We have documented all incidents on our video surveillance equipment. Three of our clerks are attending counseling from the trouble your husband has caused. All complaints against your husband have been compiled and are listed below.


15 Things your husband has done while his spouse is shopping:


1. June 15: Took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in people's carts when they weren't looking.


2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in House wares to go off at 5-minute intervals.
