I use nortan, but my subscription is going to expire next month. Do you know of a free or low cost anti-virus and anti-spyware that has worked good for you?

Sounds like you're infected with spyware. Aside from the commercial offerings that many virus protection companies have added to their anti-virus, Adaware and Spybot search and destroy are two well known anti-spyware products that have free versions. Microsoft also has its windows defender product that is still in beta, but is pretty good.

Also, not using IE as your browser and switching instead to firefox is a good way to avoid getting infected with spyware.

i have both ParetoLogic Anti-Spyware and Spyware Doctor. they both have real time protection. will this cause problem? i heard that having two real time protection products will interfere with each other. is this true? if so what should i do? and are there any other products out there than these two?

It usually happens if 2 Antivirus Protection running. For Antispyware as far as I know it should be a problem but problems may only arise if their scheduled scan is at the same time. Make sure they are in different time. Also soemtimes it makes computer run slow to have two program running at the program. If you have enough memory, you don't have to worry.
