What are the licensing requirements and how would one become a private investigator without being a former police officer?

Is there a way that I could get a job with an investigation company and they would train me?

I’m not sure where Blessed get their information, but they are wrong. Private investigations is not an unregulated field nor are there no pre-requisites. I am licensed in California where you must have 3 years and 6,000 hours of investigative experience, pass a background check and have your fingerprints run through the Department of Justice before you are allowed to have 2 hours to answer 150 question test given by the state.

I am not aware of any state that requires you to have ever been a police officer. Being a police officer does not give you the training to be a PI. They have nothing to do with one another.

Although having a degree in Criminal Justice is great and will obviously help you in interpreting the law it will not help you too much in locating people, where an how to find information and assets or how to pick a vantage point in a surveillance.

Some agencies are willing to train, but you will likely have to start off helping in the office. You can also get some training in law offices, information brokers, collection agencies and process serving companies this will make you more marketable to a private investigative agency.
