How secure is the wireless internet connection my building provides?
I live in a large apartment block and there is a company who provides wireless internet service for the whole building. I'm wondering if there are any security issues with this. I log on through a web site and therefore don't use a modem, router or any other device which usually have security features. Also, are there any additional steps I could take to make it more secure.
Thanks
If you dont already have a firewall, I would suggest installing one.

Netgear WPN824v2 wireless light on router continiously blinks with nothing connected to it?
After purchasing the router I installed it as the CD told me to. I noticed that everything worked great, but the wireless light on the front of the router contiously blinks. If I have the LED light on the top of the router on the flash blue all the time. I contacted Netgear and was put in touch with a Indian woman. She quickly dismissed my problem saying it was normal, which did not satisfy my worries. This router is in an apartment complex and I want to make sure my router is not sending out wireless information as a blinking wireless light means according to Netgear's online manual. My security is where it should be, and if I don't get this problem resolved I'll just take the router back to Best Buy. The wireless and lan work great, but that darn blinking wireless light bothers me. Any help is greatly appreciated. BTW the only wireless device I have hooked up to the router is a Nintendo Wii, which I unplugged and the wireless light still blinks all the time.
You should be able to connect to your wireless router and look at the devices that are connected to it. Most likely they will be under the DHCP settings (Dynamic Host Control Protocol - big word for "internet sharing"). The devices will be listed by the IP address and their MAC address.
Look for the MAC (Media Access Control) addresses in all your devices - every device that can connect to a network, wired or wireless will have a unique MAC address which consists of 12 hex characters. Match these MAC addresses to all your devices. If you find one that you do not own, that is an external device connected to your network.
To find out your MAC and IP, goto START => RUN => type cmd and then in the dos box, type ipconfig /all

Tenant Rights?
Lemme summarize what happened. I have 2 dogs, have paid my pet deposit. I was babysitting my mothers cats for three weeks while she was recovering from a back surgery that prevented her from bending down, driving, etc…I did not inform my apartment, but since it was such a short amount of time I didn’t think it was necessary. A neighbor somehow found out and reported me for having 4 animals in my apartment when the maximum allowed is 2. I received a letter asking me to remove the animals within 24 hours. I complied. Since the incident, the apartment complex has been entering my apartment when I am out without permission or notification. Not only am I concerned because I have valuables in my home (jewelry, TV’s, and laptop), but one of my dogs is a rescue dog (miniature schnauzer) and isn’t very friendly toward strangers in the home; very protective of his space. I am concerned that he might bite a tenant or maintenance person for entering the home when I am not there. Because of this I have changed the doorknob on my bedroom door to a key-entry lock that only my husband and I have access to. I have been making sure the dogs are confined to my bedroom when I am out to prevent any danger and that my valuables are kept inside. However, I was reading over the Texas Tenant Advisors website and apparently they have the right to enter my home without my permission for the following reasons…
-removing or rekeying unauthorized security devices
-removing unauthorized animals
I feel like they are keeping tabs on me because they are trying to catch me doing something shady. If they enter my home do they have the right to remove my doorknob to gain access to my bedroom? Does a doorknob with a key entry count as an unauthorized security device? Can I do anything about it?
go_lc_bears,
First of all I am not scamming my apartment. I paid my effing deposit just like everyone else who has animals. And FYI it was not the same question. The first was about whether they had the right to enter my home from now on without authorization because I had unauthorized animals in my home in the past. Does that PERMANENTLY give them the right to enter MY HOME when I am out? Even though I have paid the pet deposit and complied with their request to remove the cats?
This question is about whether they have the right to remove the door knob that prevents my dog from taking a bite out of them?
Obviously you've been a leasing agent and have a chip on your shoulder because too many tenants pissed you off. Stop being rude, and if you're not going to answer the question politely don't read it.
Well Ms. Bears,
I pay my rent on the first of every month too. I have lived in those apartments for 3 years now, in 3 different units, and I have never had an issue with them until now. I repaint my apartment and shampoo the carpets before I move every time...it is always immaculate when I leave...so if anything I do them a favor. I am actually a model tenant, never been in trouble, never bothered anyone. All I ask is to be left alone. It might be their property but while I am paying for it, that is MY HOME and you do NOT just enter someone's home without permission. How do I know they're not looking through personal stuff or stealing? How would you like it if someone entered your home and was going through your things? If you would kick someone out on those grounds then you are pretty heartless and frigid and thank GOD I don't live in your apartment complex. I would understand where you were coming from if the animals did damage or cost you extra money...
but when I leave everything is in the condition it was in when I moved into the unit. They need to stop worrying about something as small as an animal in an apartment and start worrying about the crime in the complex. People's cars and apartments get broken into and they're worried about me? A tenant who has never caused them trouble or strife? Sad...very sad.
Yes, In the state of Texas, the management can enter your home with out permission or notice under certain circumstances. and Yes they can remove the lock on your bedroom door. If there was an emergency and they had to gain access to that room for one reason or another the lock would slow them down. If I were you, I would go talk to the manager. Let him/her know that the unauthorized pets have been removed from the unit and explain why they were there to begin with. Also, speak to them about personnel entering the apartment. Explain to them the reason you want to be notified of people entering your apartment is for the safety of their staff. DO NOT tell them you are afraid that your dog may bite them (as they can and will require you to remove that dog from the premises as well). Tell them that you do not like confining your pets to one room, however you also don't want your pets to escape when they are entering or leaving. the apartment. If you are polite and respectful when speaking with them, they will normally show the same respect to you. The manager may not even know that the maintenance staff is entering your apartment with out permission or notice.

Home security?
My mother lives alone in a condo community. She came home today to find that someone broke into her house and rearranged the objects in her house. They didn't take anything. The scary thing is they have a key. They entered the house through the front door by way of key and left the same way. My mother and I are the only ones who have a key to her place, and I don't live nearby. The community makes it mandatory that their office has a key to everyone's apartment. My mother is unable to change the locks on her door or even install any type of anti intrusion device. I fear for her safety as someone apparently has the key to her place. Any ideas on what we can do to ensure her safety and still comply with the rules of the community?

Wireless Home Security
There is no question that the world is a more dangerous place today than it used to be. There are many of us who remember when you could leave your door unlocked and we knew everyone who can into our neighborhoods. There was a time when crime was a distant thing and not something that is up close and personal. Our home is supposed to be our castle but the truth is, those days are gone forever. So many people are contemplating how to protect their homes, businesses, and family the most effective and efficient way. With so many types of security devices on the market, which is the best one to purchase? One idea that is very popular is wireless home security. Part of the reason that people are a bit lazy to install the kind of security measures that they need is the time and trouble to install the system. Now, with wireless home security, installation, maintenance, reliability factors are very manageable. 'Wireless' is a big part of our modern lives. Probably nobody remembers that the first television remote control was attached to the TV with a cord. That would seem very foolish now. That same applies to home security. Wireless home security offers virtually all the advantages of the traditional hardwire applications much, much more easily. The system operates very simply. A wireless home security system includes the security device itself which send a radio message to a receiver that then sets off an alarm or calls the police of security agency. Very, very simple. On big advantage to a wireless home security system is that the devices can be placed in area where a hardwire system is impossible or undesirable for other reasons. Remember that the security device that you hooked up to your wireless home security system can be a video camera, a motion detector, or a mechanical device that tells you when a door or window is opened. You can even hook a wireless home security system, particularly in the case of a camera, right to your computer. ...
