Do they make stand alone DVR consoles for Televisions?
I have to downgrade my cable package which mean I have to remove the upgrade for the DVR console.
I have to downgrade my cable package which mean I have to remove the upgrade for the DVR console and I would like to purchase onethat doesn't have a monthly fee associated with it.
You mean like Tivo? It's a standalone DVR unit which isn't dependent on your television source (can be any cable company, satellite, over-the-air broadcast). Tivo charges a monthly fee though but you can buy lifetime ones on eBay (but they're expensive.) The company doesn't sell lifetime subscriptions any more. I have a Tivo and I love it. The Tivo Series 3 can record HDTV while anything before the Series 3 only record standard TV.
You can also build your own by getting a tuner card for your PC and using a Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Media Edition, GBPVR (Windows compatible, free), MythTV (Linux compatible, free). There are others that cost money that I haven't tried. I've used Media Edition and GBPVR and was satisfied with it. Some tuner cards come with software that has basic functions.
If you build your own, you won't have to pay a monthly subscription.

Can I use a stand alone DVR with basic cable?
I'm in college and we only get basic cable (nothing digital that I know of). I'm thinking about buying a combo dvd-dvr player (if such a thing is possible) but I don't know if it'll work with my colleges cable service. What do you think?
Hello, I currently own a Tivo Series 2 DVR and I have basic cable (not Digital). I have no problems using it and if you have a computer, you can connect your Tivo Series 2 to it and have it use your internet connect to get the program listings (instead of using a standard phone line). Also once connected to your computer, you can listen to your music or view photos through you Tivo.
Combines functionality of multiple A/V components into a single unit: DVD player/recorder, VCR, and digital tuner, with support for MP3/WMA/JPEG/DivX files
One-touch/programmable recording and playback of DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW formats and VHS cassette; dubbing from DVD to tape and vice versa
Video upconversion of DVD resolution up to 1080p via HDMI output; support for Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound formats
Where can I find a stand alone DVR?
I want a DVR w/ a hard drive, not one that records onto dvd's. I do NOT want one from Tivo, DirecTv, or my cable company! But I would like one that has some kind of basic guide to record from. It would also be good if it could record 2 shows at once and record to VHS (through VCR) capabilities. Also, do all dvr's record live tv to pause and rewind? I heard that Sony and Panasonic make good models, but their websites were no help. I've been searching online (and on here for answers) and I can't find ANY that fit my needs. PLEASE HELP!
Thanks everyone, but I don't want a TIVO b/c of the subscription fee. Plus, I don't have a phone line (cell phone only) and I don't want to have to buy a router for my computer and run the wires all over the place to connect it to my internet. I don't want one from my cable company b/c I'd have to upgrade to digital cable, plus I can't keep/own the box. Thanks anyway.
Also, the only reason I wanted to have a DVR that connects to a VCR is just in case I record a program on the DVR that I want to copy to tape (to transport it or keep permanently).
Uhhhhhhhhh, just buy a Tivo. It is the only one that does everything you want it to do and does it well. The new Series 3 will have dual tuners withoutput to a VCR or DVD recorder.

Which Stand Alone DVR can I use?
I live in the Dominican Republic and as today I was using a VCR to record my fav. tv programs. It broke and I want to use a DVR instead of a new VCR.
Which DVR can I use, since down here isn't any tivo or tvguide plus service available? Is there any stand alone DVR that I can program as a VCR?
Hi Vger,
My personal favorite is the Philips DVDR3575H.
You can read all about it here - http://www.amazon.com/Philips-DVDR3575H-37-Upscaling-Built/dp/B000P76KXY/ref=pd_bbs_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1201902823&sr=8-3
You program it like you did an old VCR but it records on a hard drive.

Bleacher ReportThe Ultimate Fighter Nine: Episode Seven Reviewby John Shubert (Scribe) I'm back in action this week after DVR issues derailed my review last week. Sorry about that folks. Hated it, as someone said before I could have handled it as a stand alone during the season. As a season finale I was tres disappointed. After reading the comments above I might watch it again, because I angrily deleted it from my DVR.
