When your merchandise sets off a security alarm at a store what are you supposed to do?
If you pay for merchandise and they don't deactivate security tags; what are you required to do. I think if you pay them your contract with them is fulfilled. Once I bought something at Radio Shack and no alarms went off until I left Walgreen's. Every head in the store snapped around to look at me, it was embarrasing. I have seen some footage where peoples progress was stopped by security. I am not certain that this was not fiction though. Once you make a valid purchase, I think your obligation to the merchant is over. Theirs is just begining. They owe you satisfaction guaranteed, maybe other guarantee's explicit or implied. You do not owe them anything. Transaction over. You could take the merchandise to the nearest dumpster and throw it away. So why do the think they can (arrest?) you?
It's happen to me a few time, and just once I'd like to take off running to my truck and let them tackle me, push me to the ground force me back to the store, just so I could sue them. After all I paid for the goods and I am under no obligation to stop, because they didn't do their job, and let them check my receipt to prove I paid for it.
Yes, I understand about shrinkage, and that stores need to do something to stop it, but I think they are leaving themselves open to a bunch of law suits. And not even by the way I described. Imagine someone bought something, the store forgot or the machine malfunctioned, the customer starts to leave. the alarm goes off, they decide not to stop, after all they paid for everything so it couldn't be them who set the alarm off. The store security runs after them forces them back into the store. They can't leave because security won't let them. Now security searches them and finds nothing. Everything the person has, is paid for, doesn't that leave the store open to a law suit? Think about it. Even if it doesn't, the person sues, it would be cheaper to settle for 5k to 10k just to keep it out of court.
Something to think about.
Anyway just stop let the nice lady check and you'll be on your way.

Why do the store security alarms go off when I walk in a store?
It doesn't matter which store it is, Jewel, Walgreens, Walmart...if it has one of the newer alarm systems then I go off even when I enter (and exit). But every so often it does not. I have been told it could be my keys or cell phone but what the heck I am supposed to, take every key off my ring and walk in and out of stores? I know it's not my cell phone already. It is extremely annoying.
These security detectors are likely being set off by a magnetic strip on one of your credit cards or similar items, like gift cards or ATM cards. It could be a real pain to figure out which one is doing it.

Do barcodes set off security alarms at a store?
I got into an argument with someone. They say a barcode [just a regular little paper barcode] will make a security detector at the door of a store go off. I disagree and think this is false. I think that the barcode does not affect the security detector. Only the special security devices installed in the packaging do.
Am I right or wrong?
Let me know what you think.
You are correct.
It's not the printed barcode that sets off the security detectors. There are magnetic tags stuck to certain items that, when they are not deactivated, set off the alarm. They get deactivated by the cashier when you pay for them, but if they are not deactivated, they'll cause the alarm to go off when you walk by the sensors.

If you set off your stores security alarm upon leaving?
when i was leaving my store tonight I had set the alarm, punched in the code, and as i was walking out the door, realized I left the outside lights on, so I had to go back and turn them off, and set the alarm off, ...how much does the local police dept charge an establishment for coming out to make sure everything is ok?
It depends on where you live. LA and New York would cost more then some hick town in the midwest. I would estimate the national average at around $50.00.

does any one else have problems with setting of security alarms at stores?
lately and at random i have been setting off security alarms when walking into stores. i had thought that it was my cell phone and stopped bringing it when i would go shopping and stuff, and that seemed to do the trick, but one time i went in without a cell phone and it still went off. like i say it is very random how it seems to go off.... does this happen to anybodyy? i would really like to figure out what it is so i can stop it but im scared and embaressed to go into stores in fear that the security alarms will go off!
Do you have a aftermarket Alarm or Keyless entry system?
These that are not manufactured or made optional on a vehicle do not require SAE electromagnetic compatibility testing. Just part 15 FCC testing. More than likely this is your cause.
P.S. Most alarm systems are RF or Inductive proximity at a tuned frequency. Hence it is very possible for a device to cause interference. Also depending on the location and installation company they could have bad interconnects or other tuning issues.

Security device from another store setting off store alarm. Was I too rude or too tolerant?
We went to a birthday party at a friend's house, so I put a new sd camera card that I had bought but not opened in my coat pocket.
The next day we went in the farm store, which does not sell electronics or anything for cameras or computers. I set off the alarm. After the clerk took the bags back to desensitize them (mouse traps do not have sensor tags anyway) it was evident that it was my coat that was setting off the alarm. I explained it was either my photo chip or my insulin needles and I allowed the clerks (two of them by this time) to run my sd card near the scanner. It set off the alarm.
Clearly there was another store tag on the item. My husband still has the receipt somewhere probably at home.
One of the clerks said she would have to call the manager.
I have shopped at the farm store one or more times per week since it opened in 1977.
I told the clerk that she did not have to call the manager because the product was not from their store and so it did not concern him. I had a meeting that I had to be at shortly and would not be late because of this. And I left, got in the vehicle and left the store lot. My husband was with me.
My husband and daughters thought I was too nice, I thought the clerk pushed me into being really rude to her, I felt while justifiably perhaps, I was extremely rude.
What do you think?
Thanks everyone! I learned a lot from all of you!
I think you were just fine. Any clerk with a functioning mind would have simply scanned the merchandise and clearly seen that it was not from their store. Most store clerks these days are morons.
