Advice on GPS enabled phones/plans for "kid tracking" purposes?
My 12 year old son has mild autism, and I'd feel better with one of those in his backpack when he's off to school.
Things happen, and I like the idea of him being able to contact me when it does...and for me and his mom to know where he is if something goes wrong.
He would be aware that his phone had this feature, and why.
Any advice on brands or plans?
Verizon Wireless has strongly taken this into concideration. Many of their phones are child and parent chaperone capable. Chaperone is the ability to track your child. Also, online, with chaperone, you can set up a designated area (an area in which your child is supposed to be). If they leave that area, verizon wireless will send you a txt message letting you know they have left their allowed area and it will tell you their current location. This service is available on all contract plans starting at 59.99 or higher (this is a family plan which is required for chaperone. This plan includes 450 minutes. You must add the chaperone package which varies. Their is a small catch. You must have two phones (one for you, and one for your child). They must be active on the same family plan and have chaperone added to the account. The phone that you purchase for you must have the chaperone parent ability. The phone for your son must have the chaperone child ability. Their are many phones with both of these abilities. The vast majoriaty of them are LG, however. If you visit a verizon wireless store, a sales rep will be glad to assist you.
I strongly recommend verizon wireless, however, sprint (the ONLY other carrier with this ability has plans similar starting at 199.99 a month for 500 minutes. Also, verizon chaperone only works in a verizon coverage area. Their coverage is among the best and i'm sure you'll like it, plus, if you don't you have thirty days to change your mind.

Kids' shoe GPS tracking device?
I was watching a CSI episode, and there was a kid with this teddy bear on her shoe and that's how they tracked her. It had a GPS device in it. This may be a stupid question, but do those exist? I know they have phones and wristwatches, but is there really something that goes on kids' shoes? If not, I'm inventing it :).

how do i track my kids phones on the net without having to go through Verizon? They offer a service that is ridiculous because they tell your kids you are tracking them. So if my teenager knows this they will just shut off there phone or leave it at there friends house.
The problem you have is....you need a receiver capable of listening to the correct satellite signal and then translating that with information you can use.
The dude ahead of me gave two sites. One does not work, but the other only gives a city locale, which could be useful, but unless someone else out there knows a way around this, I think this is the best you will do.
Greedy companies like at&t know you are stuck and if you want the capability of utilizing gps then they will make you PAY for it. Everyone wants to charge you for every single solitary thing known to man.....so, as a result it makes things like this difficult.
Your kids' cell phones report their location to a satellite, and that signal is what you need....you need a device, like I said, that can capture it, interpret it and then display it with useful info.....that's what you need, but.....always a but......I am not sure if you can acquire such a device, and if you can.....at what cost. Again....it all comes back to money. It's a shame, but that's how things stand for you.
I know this isn't useful, but I thought understanding what you're dealing with might help in some way.

ok so yesterday there was a question asking where one could get a GPS tracking chip for their child. i personally think having a chip implanted into your child is the most disgusting thing i have ever heard. but thats my opinion. whats yours?

midnight i dont ean the prupose for the chip is digusting but the implanting it into a child. these arent available yet but they look to be in the works. my concern for children with them is that ANY technology that deals with radio waves and computers can be hacked which no doubt someone will figure it out nd have access to every childs whereabouts that has a chip. i just think its creepy and if your religious it say in the bible its the mark of the beast...
Considering the amazingly high odds of any given child ever actually being abducted (something like 1/30,000, the great majority of whom are eventually returned unharmed anyway), I don't think it's worth treating human beings like cattle or property.

It was a promotion offer of 0$ first month , 9.99 following. I figure what the heck, track ur kid on you cell phone or computer, COOL! i a have never done that before, Why not? It sound like fun.

I think its a great idea! You can never be too careful with teenagers these days.. I have a newborn son, but if that kind of stuff is available when he's older, I'm definitely getting it!
