GPS users: Are you aware of these security dangers?

Do you have your home address listed under 'Home'?

Did you know that if your GPS unit is stolen, the thief will know EXACTLY where you live? And if you have your garage door opener stolen, the thief can break into your house practically unnoticed by your neighbors?

Experts suggest you put your GPS's 'Home' address to a public location a mile or so from your actual residence--you'll know how to get home from there. That way if your unit and garage door opener (or spare keys if you happen to have them handy for the thief), he won't be able to get to your house--it may just lead him to the police station or other public building. Also, REMOVE all mail with your address from your vehicle, including your registration!

Hope this brings you piece of mind. Any other suggestions?

I don't have a GPS or a vehicle worth breaking into at the moment, but this is good advice. Thanks.

Do you believe that we need to give up our privacy over security?

Its seems that are privacy is almost completely gone. Our USA government can listen to our phone conversations. Look at out bank transactions. Go in to our house when we are not home and take what ever they want, and we never need to know about it. Patriot Act. All our cell phones have GPS in them so they can track us anywhere,so do the new cars. And all this in the name or National Security , do you believe that we have to give up our privacy completely for us to be secure, I strongly disagree. What next installing cameras in our homes , you know that new LCD TVs coming soon will have cells in them that work as camera. So whenever you will watch TV government can watch you. Pick up Maximum PC Magazine if you dont believe me. Than what get all us chipped with RFID so we can be like dogs on the leash. What are your opinions on this?

Does DS Have GPS?

I'm Going To Cuba Tomorrow, And I Was Wondering If It Emits Or Recieves GPS Signals, As Apparently Cuban Security Takes Away Anything That Does. Is It Safe To Take It With Me, Or Leave It At Home?
Thanks To Everyone Who Has Answered Already, It May Seem liek A Stupid Question, But I Really Don't Have A Clue About It :-)

Not, as far as I know, it has not. Actually there isn't a good reason for having. Enjoy your vacation. However, I thing that you can do it without the DS, so don't get it with you if you want to be sure. On the other hand you can contact the Nintendo department in the UK and explain them the situation. I'm sure they will be helpful.

Looking for a security alarm that will trigger if someone walks past it (laser trip switch)?

My car was broken into and the GPS stolen the other week while sitting in my home's driveway. I'd like to buy some alarms that would signal me if anyone walks through an invisible laser path though I don't know a good system to pick up. I already have Brinks security and the conventional door / window alarms. So, having this laser "trip trigger" would allow me to shine it in the backyard (which has access to a back alley) and notify me if anyone walks through it in the night.

Any ideas where to pick some up or good systems to buy?

Go to a well stocked Hardware store (Home Depot, etc.) and get a 'motion detector' light and point it to the area you want coverage for.
Instead of screwing in a light bulb into the sockets, put a socket-to-plug adapter so you can plug an extension cord in and run this back to the house.
There, take the cord and plug it in to any kind of 110Vac device that will sound a bell, or buzzer, or chime, etc. when it has electricity sent to it.
If you have critters (raccoons, rabbits, cats, dogs etc.) in the neighborhood, you'll need to have the sensor field narrowed down and focused for man sized targets.
Now, when a body passes into the detection field, the motion detector will 'open' a circuit back to your 'alarm' and you can get your 12ga. and 'investigate'.

I use this method for deer hunting from the front porch.

Right to Privacy?

WHY have the American people ALLOWED the Government to slowly take our right to privacy away? GPS- general people search. Cell phones- Human tracking devices. Home Security systems- track peoples commings and goings. ALL in the name of "protection". They have preyed on peoples fears which is strange since for centuries, until these things were invented people survived just fine. So why have we allowed them take our privacy away?
Some technology should be left alone, Einstien regreted giving the formula for the A-bomb-That was great "technology now wasn't it Melissa?
To All asking if I'm a terrorist/afiliated w/a T-group NO I AM NOT IN ANY WAY.
Another point All they have to do is put your name, SS#, or address even (your phone lines, cell phone records containing everything you've said are kept on record) into a computer and they know anything about you. If anyone wants they can buy equipment and sit a block away and here everything you are saying. We are told lies to suit what they want to accomplish.CRIMINAL OR NOT you ARE being looked at(just incase)!!! Don't believe it go to --PUSHBURGER.com and check it out for yourselves. everything you do on a computer is checked out by your servers. WHY is it so hard to believe?? As for the Gov't employee things have been kept from you. I HAVE read/watched enough about ww2 to know what I'm talking about. I had 2 grandfathers serve. This war we're currently in stems from promises made during the russia/afganistan war that we would help rebuild. When the war was over what did we do? pulled out.

I think this is a serious question that more people should be asking. The majority of the answers that have been previously given should shed some light on it....apathy. We now think we cannot live without "technology" and gladly accept it without establishing parameters so it cannot be used to invade oue privacy. Today on NPR (national public radio) it was announced that the first human has been microchipped with medical records. This is WAY to much big brother and if you are christian (not trying to open up that debate, however) one step closer to the predictions of revelations. All technologhy that we accept daily for the enrichment of lives can be used to take that enrichment away. Think movie cameras: it is great to film a childs first steps but do we need the goverment recording the daily steps that we take in public? Just to make us "feel" safer. None of us are any safer as a result of technology just lured into a false sense of security! Great question!

Lojack and Theft Recvoery/Security for Sony Vaio FW?

I'm starting College soon and I want to get something to protect my Laptop at home, and at school. I'm not too sure about getting one of those locks with a cord wrapping around my laptop, in fear of scratching it.

But I've heard about Lojack for laptops. will it work for this computer which I'll have in a week or two?
Sony Vaio FW VGN-FW190:(not too sure if the specs matter or not)
Intel® Core 2™ Duo Processor T9400 (2.53GHz)
Microsoft® Windows Vista® Home Premium with Service Pack 1
3GB DDR2-SDRAM (DDR2-800, 2GB + 1GB)
320 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive [5400 rpm]
Blu-ray Disc™ Read and Write Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3470
WLAN (802.11a/b/g/n) with integrated Bluetooth® technology
Extended Battery

I have a few more questions:
1. Does it only work when a theif connects to the internet.
2. Can a thief avoid it by formating the drive?
3. Does Lojack collect personal information, ie. websites visted, files downloaded or programs used.
4. Or are there any alternative or better programs/ways to recover or prevent a stolen laptop. I've heard about installing a GPS Chip, but I'm not to keen on me or even someone else opening the inside of my laptop (as its very easily to damage, unlike a desktop if you were to upgrade it).

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Trust me, those cable locks will not scratch your notebook since they are laminated with plastic. Your computer will get scratched somehow, mine did without me noticing it.

LoJack will work with most PC computers regardless of the specs.

1. Yes, only on the internet, they track the computer down by the IP address.

2. Good question, NO, it will survive reformatting and wiping.

3. No, they do not track internet activities.

4. Not many I know of, LoJack is one of the cheapest ways and most reliable, too. It is definitely worth the $30 per year.

This link should really help you out in understanding. I read it a month ago and it answered every question I had. I'm probably going to get LoJack for the Dell XPS M1330 I'm going to be getting soon.
