I have a GPS tracking device on some of my employee's work vehicles. ?

I am not happy with the services provided by the company and I would like to switch. Can any company turn on a GPS tracking unit or do I have to get the service through the company where i bought the units?

As long as they tracking units are your property there shouldn't be a big problem in changing service companies. The units may need to be reprogrammed but another company should be able to do this. Find some companies that may offer the quality of service you want and ask them about the procedure.

I work for a company that sells these devices to companies to track delivery trucks, fleets, employees, etc. MUNICIPALITIES should have them in their vehicles.

I would have loved one when my kids were still teenagers.

Is it legal for an employer to track phone calls made by an employee if a phone system is used for clocking in

my work uses a 1-800 type number to clock in and out of work. I wanted to know if its legal for the company to check the number you dial from. Also, is it legal to track employees through GPS equiped work phones?

There are many legal means to find out what numbers have called your number, the most obvious one is caller ID which almost everyone has. There are other legal methods as well. If your company is not doing anything illegal to obtain the information then they have every right to do it.

Your employer also has the right to track its' own equipment.
There is nothing illegal about this.

I would assume your company has policies about what it does & doesn't do as well as what is expected from employees. If you have questions you should check with your company's Human Resources Department and get a copy of company policies. If there are no policies concerning any of this you may want to work with your company to draft some.

Employers have great freedom to track their employees. The bottom line is that if you don't like what your employer does you can always move on and get a different job or open up your own business. No one has a right to any particular job and the unfortunate thing is, unless your working for yourself you will always be subject to someone else's rules.

How would you feel if your employer put GPS tracking on your phone?

Today, my company is putting out a new policy for everyone with a company cell phone to sign. They have enabled GPS tracking for all drivers, managers and outside salesmen. Today, I have the very fun task of reviewing this with all of my staff and getting them to sign the form.

The GPS positions of all employees will now be monitored by both the dispatch department and senior management. As a regional manager, I like being able to know where my drivers are at on their delivery routes but I feel a bit uncomfortable with my footsteps being tracked as well.

Why do I feel uncomfortable even though I’m not doing anything I’m not supposed to be doing?

Even though this sounds like a breach of personal freedom the employee must understand that while s/he is at work they can legally be subject to monitoring with devices such as a GPS, CCTV camera, Internet History Monitors or packet sniffers.

Employees are company assets, just like a computer, truck or building and the employer has every right to monitor their assets.

If I were an employer - and especially if my business involved my employees traveling, I would want to monitor them as well. It is protection for the employer to help him get the best work for the salaries that s/he pays out.

There are a lot of uses for GPSs these days and asset tracking is one of them - the definition of an asset is not limited to a inanimate object.

How would you feel about renting a GPS tracker for a week, to track a teen, spouse, employee, or vehicle?

I'm just curious. I considered buying one of these tiny little GPS trackers, but they tend to be expensive.

LOL sounds interesting. Where do you put it?

can a company fit tracking device to a car that the employee has taken ownership of by signing lease aggreemen

the company have used a car scheme were we signed the lease agreement and have now told us that they are going to put gps tracking in them we have also found out if the company go bust we are responsible for the payments on the car so we think technically the vehicle is our own so they shouldnt be able to track it they are saying its to make us more productive and give customers better service its not bothered them for the last 30 yrs only now when we have signed the lease agreement

If they are paying for the car, maybe.
But I wouldn't like it.
Unless there is more to it, I would be looking for a job.
If you are legally responsible for the payments. NO.
