I am in desperate need of listening to how my employees are handling customer service in my store. Where can I buy a small remote listening device that I can hide that will transmit to a receiver nearby? Thank you!
Most states have laws against undisclosed listening/recording. However, if you fully disclose it to your customers and employees (like those messages when you call an 800 number) that you will be monitoring for training and performance, it is usually legal (your state may have specific laws, so check before you start). Some customers may not want to be recorded -- and that's when you can sit in on the meeting to solve their problems (make it part of your standard procedure when handling those customers -- you (the owner) MUST be in the face-to-face meeting).
You can then use video and audio surveillance to monitor and record what's going on -- and it wouldn't have to be hidden. Also, if your employees know that you will/can be listening and/or watching at any time, that alone may be enough to get them to clean up their act. Recording with full disclosure will make your job much easier if termination is necessary.

The earliest listening device I know of was used in the 1940s, "the thing", but I'm wondering if they were around before then, and how large they were originally?
Ever since the telegram was invented there was always the possibility of eavesdropping/bugging. However if by "bugging" you mean wireless, the 1940's (transistors-Bell Laboratories) would probably be the earliest as valve technology consumed way to much energy to be feasible.

I suspect a device has been placed in my home by new neighbor--by him knowing certain things that only by listening in would he know.
shomer tec.com is one place. ebay youd find a better price. mine cost me $279 from shomer tec and covers 1mgz to 3 ghz in frequencies. with the new high teck stuff it only uses milivolts and sometimes hard to find.

The house was new with no furniture inside at the time it happened
and all obvious places like above door and window mouldings, edges of baseboards and some outlet and light switch boxes have been checked. It is a one story split bedroom design with a bonus room upstairs. It has all hardwood, tile and low berber carpet and 9ft. ceilings except the greatroom which has vaulted. No ladders were accessible. Shelving is open wire type. I was told it would be very small but is audible and clear as far away as ten miles.
I think you need to confirm if such a device exists in your home, if yes I say confront the "Teenager(s)" and get to the bottom of this.

Radio Shack sells FM frequency detector. Since most listening devices work on FM frequencies, it should be pretty simple to locate. You can also use a Near Radio Field Meter.
