Is Garageband for Mac any good when it comes to digital audio recording?
I don't know anyone with a Mac, and none of my friends are very interested in music. I would like to find software that would let me record my music in better quality, as my Olympus voice recorder is OK, but not made for music recording. Any help, suggestions, ideas would be appreciated! Thanks!!
How does it sound? Is it difficult to learn for a non-Mac user?
Garageband offers 16 bit and 24 bit recording at 44.1 kHz. By definition, CDs are 16 bit, 44.1 kHz, so GarageBand can record and export better than CD.
From GarageBand Help:
By default, GarageBand records and exports audio at CD quality (44.1 kHz sample rate, 16-bit depth). You can have GarageBand record Real Instrument regions and export projects at a higher audio resolution (24-bit depth).
Anybody an expert in Digital Audio Recording - I need some help?
I want to be able to mix 2 audio streams and record them. One of them is my guitar and the other is a backing track. I bought Line 6 GearBox but it does not come with software that records. I exchanged it for Lexicon Lambda which comes with Cubase LE4 that expires in 30 days. I was never able to get it to record the 2 tracks, only the guitar. Its going back tomorrow. Any suggestions?
My husband said- Get Audacity, its a free open source multi track recording studio- My husband is a musician and uses this, and also, Cakewalk- the 2nd from the top digital recording systems you can get, Try audacity out, and it should work great!! Hope this helps!!! it hasnt failed us before!
OH! Something else that may be helpful in the future for your music, and practice and whatnot, would be the Tplayer, its also a free program for your computer that you can practice your music with, like, lets say you want to practice a song on the radio, you download it, and play it thorough it, and you can drop it down an octive up an octive, whatever you want- its a great practice tool. You can find it in a search through google

What is a good solution for portable digital audio recording?
I want to record live acoustic guitar music with vocals. The smaller the better. I don't need to do any mixing, just live stereo recording.
Minidisc has worked really well for me. I have an older model Sharp that is quite a bit smaller than a cassette Walkman. Not all have mic inputs though. They're on ebay all the time. Check out http://www.minidisc.org.

How did the audio industry transition from analog to digital professional recording?
I am doing a research paper on the history of audio recording technology. I am really having trouble finding information that fills in the gaps between analog tapes to cds. I am looking for inventions and such to fill in the timeline, much thanks.
Have you tried WIKIPEDIA.org? I googled your question and found a very long answer there.....too much to answer here....

Indamixx Linux Netbook Aims to Be Your Open Source Recording Studio
These days, computers and software are central to how a lot of the music that you hear is produced. Many top recording artists use ProTools and other proprietary applications to edit and mix songs, and there are newfound opportunities for garage musicians to make professional quality recordings using customized hardware and software. As noted on the Musician's Friend site, Linux fans with musical abilities may want to take note of the new $499 Indamixx Netbook MKII. It runs a Linux multimedia operating system called Transmission 3.0 that has a pre-loaded, ready-to-go set of applications for editing, mixing, and recording music.
A handheld version ofthe Indamixx Netbook MKII, running the Transmission 3.0 operating system, was the winner of Remix Magazine's "Remix Technology 2009 Award." According to Musician's Friend, the netbook provides a "multitrack recording environment that allows you to record, edit, equalize, audition, and mix audio, songs, or sound files (WAV, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, AIFF) at sample rates up to 32-bit at 96kHz" It features an advanced ProTools-like audio workstation app called Ardour, seen at left, and the Transmission operating system:
"includes 3 DAWs [Digital Audio Workstations], 260 plug-ins, a drum machine, digital DJ software, analog synths, Internet radio station, old-school style sequencer, VST host, music player, Firefox browser, and more. The 3 digital audio workstation applications range in complexity from a basic one for beginners to a much more complex one for professionals."
The netbook weighs 2.6 pounds, has a high-quality Intel HD codec for on-board sound, and plays over 2,800 drum tracks and over 350 DJ samples and scratches. There is a 160GB hard drive, 802.11g Wi-Fi, and a 10-inch display. Especially since a full-blown laptop running ProTools would cost many hundreds of dollars more, for the garage music producer who favors open source, this looks like a cool tool, or gift idea.
