How to convert audio tape to audio CD?
Any free software or other method to do it without affecting its sound quality?

I do not want to use my computer for this purpose. And where is the best place to buy such a contraption?

I would not recommend a CD recorder because in my experience, they are not great at analogue recording, also they require expensive AUDIO CD's not normal CDR's.

Put simply, you will need to connect your cassette player to your PC soundcard, then play the cassette whilst recording on your PC. A step-by-step guide is available at:

I have used ‘Magix Audio Cleaning Lab’ and ‘Audacity’ – Audacity is particularly popular since it is free!
If you record to WAV format, expect file sizes of around 10MB per minute, or 1MB per minute for MP3 (at 128kbps).
Once you have your digital versions of the recording on your PC, simply burn them on to a CD (Nero burning software or similar..). If you use Magix Audio Cleaning, the software will burn an audio CD for you without needing additional software (assuming you have a CD writing drive of course!)

I have an audio tape of a meeting that I need to have transcribed and I was told to email it as a digital file

Probably the easiest and cheapest option is to use a mini-to-mini cable (available at most electronic stores). Plug one end into your headphone jack on your tape player and the other end into the microphone jack (pink) or input jack (blue)on your computer sound card. Play the tape and use a recording program on your computer to record the audio onto a digital file on your computer. If your using Windows you can use Sound Recorder to record it as a wav file. Other programs will work too, but Sound Rcorder is about as basic as you get.
This won't give you top quality, but it will work for what you need.

I would like a machine that is a standalone unit that will allow me to burn CD-R's from audio tapes.

Dont know of anything like that, probably be costly though as I cant imagine theres much market for the general consumer.

You could get a half decent soundcard for your computer with decent audio ins, theyre pretty cheap now especially the PCI varieties, then all you need is a stereo with an audio out ie headphone socket or RCA connectors in the back and get a some audio software. There are many "respectable" sites around that will help with this, I like Sound forge but theres Audacity and Adobe Audition as well as many freeware ones. Then you just press record in the app and press play on your tape deck and go and make a cup of tea and watch a film while it records.

From there you can chop it up into tracks clean it up using plugins add effects etc...

I have cassette recordings with my children's voices from years ago and I don't want to lose them. How can I convert them to a digital format (CD)? I don't currently even have a cassette player. I do have computer with CD burner.

There many software developed for recording sounds. Only you need a cable to connect your cassette player (from headphone jack) to your PC (to aux jack usually in blue color). Then you can capture the voices with the recording software such as sound forge while the cassette playing in the cassette player.

Hello Everyone,

I have heaps of audio tapes with me which i've bought, basically on Songs and on Selfhelp. Now i use computer more often and i want to listen to these audio on computer. Need your help. Please let me know is there any standard procedure to convert those audio tapes into Mp3 format.
