I am looking for a quality digital audio recorder/mixer so i can record my own professional sounding demo cd and maybe get signed to a label. Any Suggestions???

I had it there once, but I don't remember where I went to uncheck or check a box. I know that I can get the volume control icon there from the control panel, but not the one for the Sound Blaster mixer.

Start --> Control Panel

Switch to Classic View if you aren't in Classic View

Double-click Sound and Audio Devices

Check ON the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" checkbox

Click OK

I have an Olympus DS-40 recorder and I would like to record directly from my Yamaha Clavinova. I have the connections from the RCA out to the 1/8" jack in my recorder. The sensitivity is at its lowest on the ds-40, and unfortunately the output for the clavinova is a set invariable level. It is still too strong a signal and greatly distorts the audio. Even though I have a mixer, I would like to know if there is a way I can decrease the level directly between the source and the recorder via resistor or something of the sort. I realize this recorder is not meant to be used in this way but I would like to adapt it to work.

You should be plugged into the line level, or aux level on the recorder, not the microphone input. You can cut the level with resistors, but it would take two on each wire. Perhaps 470 ohms in series and 10000 ohms in parallel with the parallel resistor being connected on the wire to Yamaha. Email me if you need a better explanation.

Including editing software (PC or Mac---haven't decided but I have a PC right now), mics, portable recorders, speakers, etc.

Mind you I don't have the biggest budget (still a student).

you need:
A computer and audio program (or hardware such as an mpc)
I have a musicxpc computer, it cost about $2500 new but its because I also record vocals and its super quiet. For people that compose music for films, you wont be recording external audio so you just need a very fast computer that can handle multiple fx and has a really good sound card or put one in yourself (fx are what you add to sounds to tweak them and it uses alot of computer memory).
For programs, it doesnt matter what you use, you can send away to have professionals mix and master. I have pro tools which alot of people believe is much better than Fl Studio because it costs $2500 and Fl Studio is like a couple hundred....but I use it for mixing and mastering and recording vocals. All you need is Fl Studio but dont use the instruments it comes with, they are horrible. Purchase samples from somewhere else and import them into the program. The samples are what makes quality sound, not the program. You can purchase the same samples people like Ennio Morricone use if you look around. I have a large library of samples and whenever I finish producing a song, I send it to someone else to mix and master. I pay them for each song (Black Dog Mastering). I know how to mix and master, but they specialize in it more so I only have to worry about producing the music and they can worry about cleaning it up, adding fx, and making it sound nice. I use fx but only to show them what I want it to sound like...I send them 2 versions of my song, one without fx and one with fx so they can see what I want it to sound like, but still have the original version without fx so they can work on it. I send them all the instruments as seperate tracks..break the song down. Thats really all you need if you want to start doing it. A computer and software (or mixer), some good samples, and find someone whos good at mixing and mastering. If you have never used Fl Studio before, theres some good tutorials for beginners on youtube

It doesnt really matter if you have a pc or mac. I already knew how to produce before I went to school for audio engineering but I wanted to see what I didnt know and there was a few things and also I wanted to take music business courses. We used Macs in class (with pro tools) but I had my pro tools and fl studio on a pc at home, so it doesnt really matter.

If you just upgraded to XP or Vista, the voice recorder is available under All Programs> Accessories> Entertainment>
Sound Recorder.

Every body!I have a big problem with my PC.It has taken so much time to be solved, but still I've couldn't!!
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop.It has a problem from the first day.In Adjust audio properties / audio (tab) / sound recorder, "Advanced" is inactive!And in volume controls, in recording it has just 2 options: "Line in" & "Microphone" ! There's no "stereo mixer" and other usuals.I need to record the sound which I hear, but it's not possible by these 2 options.before it, I had a desktop PC, and I used "stereo mixer" option to record the sound, playing of my system. I don't think there be another way to record by this driver.(except joining from mic to Line in by a wire! I know it but it'll damage mic&Line in ports!)Please if you know any way, help me!Or if you know any other driver which can be matched with my sound card, tell me.

Ram: 1 GB
Graphic: 256 ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
OS: Windows XP Home Edition

I had same problem with Inspiron 1505 and used link below with great success. Go to third item down in below post which refers you to a LG download site and follow the directions to obtain and install the Sigmatel mixer. It was simple, just run it
and it work w/ the existing Sigmatel limited package.
